Steadfast Through The Storm
"I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken." -Psalm 16:8
The storms we experience in our lives, whether physical or metaphorical, are never pleasant. If they were, we would call them a "walk in the park" or "a piece of cake." When you are dealing with a storm, you protect yourself, loved ones, and your possessions to the best of your ability. You want to make sure you survive to see the end of the storm. Often times, we fail to remember that every type of storm tests our character. How do we respond when we are no longer able to experience our everyday comforts? Are we angry and lash out towards others? Are we so grief-stricken we can't function? Do we become robotic in order to not deal with the emotional stress?
As someone that has experienced many storms in my lifetime, I can honestly say I have had all of these reactions at one time or another. In recent years I have taken a different approach.
--For those that are fans of the show Lost, you'll appreciate this--
On the show, there is a scene where Kate is panicking about some danger that she can't see, but knows is present. She knows she needs to move from her place of safety in order to see if her friends are safe. She's frightened and everything in her and around tries to convince her that the wise thing would be to remain where she is. Instead, she starts counting to ten. She gives herself ten seconds to let the fear ingulf her. After ten she no longer is allowed to let the fear stop her from moving forward.
It's okay to be afraid and unsure for a short time. We're human. It's not okay for that fear and uncertainty to cripple to us from moving forward and having faith in the One that has everything under control.
"Because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." -James 1:3
Chris and I are having our faith strongly tested in regards to God calling us to Indianapolis. You may wonder if God is actually calling us to Indianapolis versus Him closing the door on us moving. The testing of our faith is not supposed to be an easy task. It's meant to be a storm at times. It's meant to test our character. It's meant to see if we know God is in control or if we are. The door to Indianapolis continues to remain open because through our faith in these trying times, God continues to provide. We know we can do nothing but through Him. We are not enough, but He is everything. We may want to remain rooted in the fear of the unknown at times, but instead we will remain steadfast in the storm because..
